You are invited to choose from this fascinating selection of cultural and community activities available for visitors in Teso, north eastern Uganda.


1. Home life, traditional skills and cultural experiences, including:

• Staying overnight with a family in your own grass-thatched house (hut / banda)
• Learning how to process crops and food (drying, threshing, grinding, storing)
• Helping prepare and cook local food (eg: atap, posho, beans, greens, groundnut sauce  etc)
• Processing groundnuts (peanuts) to make your own groundnut paste (peanut butter)
• Ploughing with oxen
• Taking animals out to graze
• Fetching water from a borehole or spring
• Listening to traditional stories
• Traditional dancing
• Singing and music played on traditional instruments
• Visiting herbal medicine practitioners to learn about the plants they use for treatments
• Brick-making, local building and thatching
• Making large clay water pots


2. Walks, hikes & cycling (1 hour to two days):

• Ancient rock paintings at Kapir or Nyero
• Kapir Hill for stunning views, especially good at sunset
• Rock scrambling (Kapir, Soroti, Tididiek or Ngora)
• Agricultural guided walk to learn about crops (cultivation and harvesting)
• Tour of villages


3. Water activities, including:

• Bird-watching boat trip – look for the rare Shoebill, endemic Fox’s Weaver and many others
• Fishing with local fishermen, using a variety of methods (half or whole day)
• Boat trips on one of the lakes and through grassy swamps (half/ whole day or overnight)
• Canoeing in local ‘dug-out’ canoes


4. Community activities, including:

• Visiting a primary school
• Playing football
• Attending a church service
• Weekly village market or daily town market


5. Volunteer for two or more weeks, including:

• Educational placements – eg: teaching, adult literacy, extra-curricular activities in schools, play activities for young children, skills training, sport
• Medical – eg: help in a clinic or hospital, health education, immunisation programmes
• Art and craft workshops
• Building work, including traditional houses
• Community development or conservation
• Help develop a cultural museum
• Christian ministry in churches and schools
